Whole-home surge protectors are designed to protect your home from dangerous lightning strikes that could knock out power or fry your electronics, potentially resulting in thousands of dollars in damages.  Recently, however, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding whole-home surge protectors, claiming they’re a waste of money and don’t do what they claim to be able to do. We’ll start by talking about what surge protectors are not designed for: protecting your home from all sources of increased voltage. Power surges most commonly originate inside your home as a result of different appliances turning on and off. Whole-home surge protectors do protect your home from power surges that originate outside, commonly caused by lightning strikes but also resulting from any interruptions to the power: downed wires or utility poles, wind damage, utility repairs, etc.

There are a few different ways power surges can occur. Lightning strikes, which people tend to be most worried about, are actually pretty uncommon—conditions need to be perfect, and the strike needs to occur less than one mile away from your home. Despite their rarity, lightning strikes can send a 200,000-amp jolt through your home and are definitely not to be taken lightly.

The majority of external power surges occur when the magnetic field created by wires conducting electricity collapses, which sends large voltages down the wires and eventually, into homes and buildings.

Effectively defending your home from power surges requires a two-step approach: first, outfitting it with a whole-home surge protector, then using surge-protected outlets and power strips indoors. Both types of surge protectors act essentially like pressure relief valves, diverting excess energy away and restoring normal operation once levels regulate.

Whole-home surge protectors are usually wired to a service panel and are designed to stop surges of at least 40,000 amps, though larger ones can be installed. Pairing them with individual plug-in surge protectors should do a good job of catching any potentially damaging energy that may get into your home.

Like many safety-related things, whole-home surge protectors are appliances you buy and hope to never actually use. But all it takes is a single downed line or big lightning strike to cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your home—not worth the risk!

The state of Texas takes up about 16.7 percent of the land area of the United States. That is such a large portion that it is important to understand when this state stands on a number of issues. Going green is one of those issues that many people wonder where Texas stands.

When talking about going green, one of the most important questions is whether or not Texas is considering Green Energy in any forms. Since this state boasts of an expansive oil industry, is there any reason to believe that it would even consider green technologies?

You cannot deny that Texas is an enormous presence in the United States, but its very size means that there is room for many different industries and that includes those that focus on improving the state of the planet. The Lone Star state is actually involved in numerous environmentally friendly Green Energy sources, and some of those initiatives have actually been launched by Texas’ own entrepreneurs and energy companies.

Of course, some of those initiatives are not solely motivated by profits. The majority are set in place by those who are interested in doing their part in the fight to save our environment. There is an altruistic element involved in many of these initiatives, and one of the best known is the one that was started by the owner and CEO of Mesa Partners an oil and natural gas producer.

As one might expect, seeing that a good portion of the state receives ample to excessive wind, there are numerous wind power generators located throughout the panhandle as well as other parts of the state. Governmental controls aside, many citizens of this fine state are doing their individual parts to make an impact on the environment.

Although Texas may be well known as an oil friendly state, it is certainly not true that it is not friendly to the environment. With 27,000 wind turbines already pumping out power, and the plan to make that number 70,000 by the end of 2012, no one can say that the state of Texas is not going green.

For example, light at 2000K-3500K looks more orange/yellow and is called ultra warm or warm white, and as temperature increases in Kelvins, color changes to more of a “paper white” known as natural or neutral white (between 3500K and 5100K) and finally into a bluish-white known as cool white (5100K+).

As a light source’s color temperature increases, brightness often increases. While shopping for LED lights, pay close attention to the color temperatures that are available for any one bulb or fixture. Choosing a warm white bulb with a color temperature around 3000K might mean sacrificing some brightness. Whereas, if you choose the natural white version, it’s likely that it will have a higher output.

In order to understand nanometers, you must first understand the electromagnetic spectrum and wavelengths. The electromagnetic spectrum is the entire range of invisible and visible light, and a wavelength is the distance between peaks of light waves. Wavelengths are measured in nanometers, which are simply units of length that indicate colors of light within the spectrum. Nanometers will tell you how red, green, yellow, purple, etc. a light source really is. These measurements start lower at ultraviolet and increase from green to blue, yellow, orange, and then red. The wavelength of a colored light can be found in the light’s specifications table.
