Hey professional videographers out there! What else should I add to my DIY photo lighting set up?

A good number of the calls I get during an average day at work fall into two categories;   customers who call to have something installed in their electrical system, and customers who tried to install it themselves and are calling me to come and fix the mistakes they made.  There’s certainly nothing wrong with trying to perform basic electrical work yourself if you have a good grasp on proper electrical safety techniques and what you’re doing.  On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with calling a top Dallas electrician to do the work for you either.  The best way to ensure the job is done right every time is to hire an honest, hardworking professional electrician who’ll stand behind his work.

Even tasks that can seem quite simple can be treacherous if you’re not sure what you’re doing.  This comes into play a lot when a homeowner is trying to perform a three-way switch installation.  It seems a lot easier to install than it really is; I generally recommend homeowners not attempt to install three-way switches without at least a electrician on the phone to walk you through the process.  Keep the following in mind:

There are tasks well suited for the do-it-yourself minded homeowner, though.  The easiest is wall outlet replacement, which is usually a very simple, straightforward procedure.   That doesn’t mean the haystack isn’t free of the odd needle that you can hurt yourself on, though.  Here are some of the more common problems I run into, along with some typical solutions or hints to keep them from happening to you: 

Approximately 200 electrical fires occur in B.C. each year with a large portion of these fires found in older homes. As sad as it is, it’s understandable. Homes built before 1970 didn’t have the types of technology we have today – not only to build a more sound electrical system but to sustain the types of products we now use on a daily basis (coffee machines, hairdryers, computers, the list goes on). If you live in an older home or are looking at buying one, be aware of these electrical hazards.

Wiring – New cables and methods of wiring have been introduced since the building of your old home. These new cables provided ground protection, higher rated insulation temperatures and are suitable for recessed lighting. This eliminates the need for knobs and tubes, which proved to be a fire hazard overtime.  If your wiring is older than 30 years, it is recommended to have an electrician review the safety of your wiring. If caught early, you may be able to simply modify your wiring rather than rewire your entire home.

Amps – The standard home in 1970 was equipped with 30 amps of power whereas now homes are equipped with anywhere from 100 amps to even 200 amps of power. With the increase in electrical devices used in a home, 100 amps have now become the standard requirements for all new homes. Review your home’s usage and determine whether it is necessary to improve your electrical system.

Arc Faults – When electricity is released unintentionally from a wire or cord the surrounding material can catch fire which is called an Arc Fault. Arc Faults are one of the highest sources of electrical fires. However, by installing an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (ARCI) you can prevent them.

For one of the first times, the solar power industry may be in a position where it needs more skilled workers than are available. In a recent report published by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) and The Solar Foundation, solar capacity has grown very quickly over the last few years, despite the fact that the economy is still dragging. If the industry continues along the lines of their forecasts, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory believes that up to 75% of the U.S. solar market will have grid-parity by the year 2015. This could make solar installation much more common, and increase the level of adoption. Although those that have been watching the solar panel industry over the past few years will be aware of the exponential growth that it has experienced, this is good news for anyone in or around the industry. It presents a great opportunity both for the job market and for those interested in alternative energy sources. Because of the increase in demand for skilled workers, this is the perfect time to embark on a new career path for anyone who is having trouble finding work, or is looking for something new. For homeowners, this means lower costs for an increasingly affordable form of renewable energy.
