Now is the time to evaluate your outdoor and landscape lighting needs in preparation for the summer season.  Follow our step-by-step landscape lighting design plan and get the job done right.

Step One:  Review the perimeters of your home, including surrounding outdoor property—front yards, back yards, side yards—to see which features you would like to accentuate, such as fountains, sculpture, or flower boxes. Choose a few areas that will stand out and add a luxurious element to your home at night.

Step Two:  Scout out areas where you will need security lighting—leading up to and at all home entryways.  Take note of areas where path lighting, step lighting, and task lighting are needed.

Step Four:  If you like to entertain outdoors—see that your property is safely lit for guests—pay attention to elevation levels and unusual dips or risings; boundaries defining rock gardens, Koi ponds, and small shrubs should be clearly visible.  Make sure you have enough ambient illumination for safe navigation, as well as sufficient task lighting for cooking and food preparation.

Step Five:  Lighting techniques, such as shadowing, silhouetting and cross lighting add artistry and depth to your landscape at night.  But do not overdo it.  Depending on the size of your property, select one to three key areas that will expand and complement your overall landscape lighting presentation.

• Conceal lights behind and below a statue or small tree to highlight form and create definition.

• Show off a sculpted garden,  a textured rock wall or a unique architectural feature of your home that will stand out at night.

THE SEASON’S TOP PICS:

Sitting here in Los Angeles, I’ll be keeping my eye on an ingenious new program in New York designed to save energy and create green collar jobs. On June 22nd, the State of New York adopted a law which will provide billions of dollars for property owners to make energy efficiency improvements. What’s so ingenious about that? The State funding won’t be for grants, but for loans. The loans will be paid back to the State in installments whenever an energy bill like an electric bill is paid.

Install a Ceiling Fan — Save Electricity Here’s how it’s supposed to work. Let’s say a property owner takes out a loan for improving insulation and installing a ceiling fan. This should save on the electric bill for A/C in the summer, freeing up the property owner to pay an installment of the loan. The utility company will charge as much as before the insulation and ceiling fan were installed and put the savings on the electric bill towards paying off the loan. When the loan is fully paid, the property owner will start seeing a lower electric bill. This is “on-bill recovery” — the loan is repaid with each payment of a lower utility bill.

The beauty part for New York is that the State won’t have to administer these little loans. People are good about paying their electric bills so the State can expect that most of the loans will be repaid. Of course, this puts the utility company in the middle, adding to its administrative load. But in some cases, the utility company may benefit in the long run by reducing the need to build new power plants.

Save Energy and Create 60,000 Green Collar Jobs New York hopes that 1,000,000 property owners throughout the State will take out loans for improved insulation, ceiling fans, installation of more efficient Energy-Star appliances, etc. Of course, this will mean more efficient use of electricity, heating oil, etc. And also importantly, New York hopes that these loans will create 60,000 “green collar” jobs. These will be new jobs in a sector that has been particularly hard-hit by the recession, construction.

As an electrician, I’m well-aware that construction jobs and jobs in many other sectors have been hard hit in L.A., too. I’m going to be watching how this program works for New York and will keep you updated. “No two snowflakes are alike.” This is a statement nearly every schoolchild has heard at least once, either while crafting unique snowflakes with a sheet of folded paper and some scissors or while learning a lesson on the science of snow. While even most scientists don’t quite understand what causes a snowflake to form such complex and beautiful columns and points and branches, one thing is for certain, the composition of snowflakes guarantees that no two will ever be identical.  However, it is possible for two snowflakes to appear to be nearly exactly alike.

A snowflake begins to form when a piece of dust catches water vapor out of the air. Water is created when two hydrogen molecules attach to an oxygen molecule. The two hydrogen molecules are angled from one another in such a way that they form a hexagonal shape when they come together during the freezing process; thus, a snowflake begins as a simple hexagonal shape or as layers of hexagons called diamond dust. The emergent properties that follow from the original hexagon are what differentiate one snowflake from another, as the humidity, the temperature in the air, and many other factors (some of which remain unclear to scientists) allow each snowflake to form in an entirely unique way with a seemingly endless variety of shapes.

However, in 1988, a scientist named Nancy Knight claimed to have located two that were the same while studying snowflakes as part of an atmospheric research project. And it appeared to be so; when put under a microscope, the emergent properties looked nearly identical. But while it is feasible that two snowflakes can appear to be exactly alike on the outside, they are never identical on an atomic level. Deuterium is an atom that appears attached to about one in every 3000 hydrogen molecules in the air. Because there are millions of atoms that make up a snowflake, the random assortment of deuterium in any two snowflakes—even in two that so very closely resemble one another—simply cannot be the same.
