Last week, we focused on electrical safety for babies and how you can baby-proof your home. When children are merely toddlers and learning to crawl or walk, their adventurous spirits can sometimes be a danger, especially when electrical appliances, wires, and plugs are in the picture. This week, we’re going to expand our efforts to include children of all ages. As your kid continues to grow, in both height and in their adventure, your home may become a greater danger zone as they can now reach kitchen appliances, electrical switches, curling irons, and virtually any other electrical device located in just about any location.

We want to share with you some of our top electrical safety tips that you can pass on to your kids to keep them out of harm’s way. It’s important to remind your children that there is nothing wrong with having an adventurous spirit, but they should always be vigilant and cautious, avoiding anything and everything that could potentially cause harm.

It’s no secret that incandescent, fluorescent, and equivalent LED fixture. In California, Pacific Gas and Electric gives a $250 rebate for a 321- to 500-watt LED replacement for a high-bay fixture. Other utility companies will offer energy-savings-based rebates by each watt reduced or custom rebates, which require an energy audit. Products must be listed in DLC’s QPL to qualify for rebates. Contact your local utility company to verify participation in the rebate program or for a complete list of incentives and qualified products.

Purchasing an LED product on DLC’s QPL is rewarding in more ways than one; immediate energy savings and increased longevity are the most widely known benefits. One studied alternating current (AC), and the other, direct current (DC). And yet, the world would not be where it is today without their contributions to science and electricity. In light of Nikola Tesla’s birthday on July 10, Mr. Electric is taking a look at the electric Tesla vs. Edison feud.

The main focus for Tesla was alternating current: an electric charge that periodically reverses its direction and is delivered to customers through a transformer. It travels at a much higher voltage than direct current and is more effective because of its ability to travel greater distances while maintaining a constant voltage.

Edison focused his research of electricity on direct current. A key difference between alternating current and direct current is that direct current only flows one way. The voltage of direct current is also constant but it is better when the electricity produced has to travel in short distances.

Edison was working on a system to generate direct current. When he could not get it to perform correctly he hired Tesla, an engineer and graduate of The Polytechnic Institute, who studied electromagnetism, promising him $100,000 if he could correct the problems Edison was having with his research and invention. Tesla corrected the problems but was not given the money. Tesla resigned and Edison spent the rest of his career trying to discredit Tesla’s research and work with electricity.

Today, nearly every home and business in the world is powered using Tesla’s alternating current. The ability of alternating current to travel over long distances and efficiently power everyday home and business electrical equipment eventually overtook Edison’s research on direct current. Edison did not lose out completely, as most battery-powered devices, fuel cells and light emitting diodes use direct current. As the push for alternative energy sources is on the rise, many manufacturers are looking at how batteries and electricity can change the way we look at fuel and the way goods are produced. Whether the electricity being used is AC or DC, Tesla helped us get where we are today.

More people have been thinking of trying to switch from oil-dependent vehicles to electric cars. However, many of the same individuals are also intimidated by the numbers of gas vs. charging stations available near them. While this might not be a problem in larger cities, more rural locations can run into charging issues. This is why charging your vehicle at home is so important. Around 88% of electric vehicle drivers refuel at home or at work.

Depending on your car, you might need different levels of charge. A level 1 charger uses wall sockets in the average home. However, 1 charge could take about 22 hours to complete. A level 2 charger is a little better. It works with a 240-volt wall outlet and can give you around 70 miles per charging hour. You can use the same outlet as your washer and dryer, but having a dedicated outlet for your car can help you prevent potential problems from alternating electricity flows.

A level 3 charger is the fastest and most efficient option for charging an electric car. Level 3 chargers, also called DC fast chargers, use a special charging port to get power to the battery while bypassing the car’s onboard charger. With this kind of station, you can fully charge your vehicle in a half hour.
